We are a RYA Recognised Training Centre and provide<\/p>\n
Course participants do not need to be a member of The Scout Association.<\/strong><\/p>\n Sailing is weather dependent and can be physically demanding, especially on windy days, if you have any concerns about fitness please ask for advice.<\/p>\n If a course is full or you have queries please email sailing@avonscouts.org.uk to express an interest and be put on the reserve list, or for answers and advice.<\/strong><\/p>\n All courses are run from the David Woodhead Centre in Bristol and we use classrooms and facilities at Underfall Yard, Severnside Sub-Aqua Club or at Young Bristol.<\/p>\n Most courses are a minimum of 16 hours (weather permitting), usually Saturday and Sunday, 9-5.30 both days.<\/p>\n The student: instructor ratio is a maximum of 6:1, unless stated otherwise Buoyancy aids are provided and are worn at all times when we are on or near the water.<\/p>\n It is important for sailing courses that trainees can swim and are confident in the water<\/p>\n See Information tab about what to wear<\/a><\/strong><\/em> Dinghy Sailing courses from Stage 1 to Stage 4 and Start Racing are available.<\/p>\n The student: instructor ratio is 6:1 however our instructor always has an assistant.<\/p>\n Generally participants sail on their own in small dinghies (Toppers and RS Zests). Sailing can be physically demanding especially on windy days. If you have doubts about your child’s fitness or ability to participate please contact us for advice.<\/p>\n Stage 1 Start Sailing course: No experience is needed, the aim is to sail and turn with instruction<\/p>\n Stage 2: Participants require Stage 1, the aim is to sail where you want to in light winds<\/p>\n Stage 3: Participants require Stage 2, the aim is to sail in more exciting winds<\/p>\n Stage 4: Participants require Stage 3, the aim is learning to sail in two man boats<\/p>\n Start Racing: Participants require Stage 3 or 4, the aim is to understand the basics of racing using Toppers and RS Fevas<\/p>\n Dinghy Sailing courses from Level 1 to Level 3, Start Racing and Seamanship are available.<\/p>\n RYA Level 1:\u00a0 No experience is necessary, however it can be physically demanding. If you are unsure of the level of fitness required please contact us. The aim is to sail and turn with instruction, usually two or three trainees sail in a crewed boat (Laser Bahia or Wayfarer) with the instructor.<\/p>\n Level 2: Participants require Level 1. The aim is to sail where you want to, in light winds, without an instructor.<\/p>\n Level 3: Participants require Level 2. This consolidates skills and introduces new techniques.<\/p>\n Start Racing: Participants require Level 2. The aim is to understand the basics of racing using Toppers, RS Zests and Fevas and Laser Bahias<\/p>\n Seamanship: An Advanced course and participants require Level 3. It is fun and teaches advanced boat controls.<\/p>\n RYA Level 2 <\/strong><\/p>\n No experience is required. For Adults and young people 15 years and over.<\/p>\n The course covers close quarter boat handling skills, basic collision regulations and planing skills.<\/p>\n The student: instructor ratio is a maximum of 3:1<\/p>\n Safety boat courses<\/b><\/p>\n Participants should be experienced drivers and the minimum age is 16. The course is useful for those wishing to teach and support racing fleets.<\/p>\n We use 2 rigid hulled powerboats, a 3.6m Rigiflex with tiller steer and a 4m Rigiflex Jeanneau\u00a0with a consul and wheel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n <!–<\/p>\n The course provides background knowledge and practical skills for powerboat drivers who are providing safety and rescue cover for dinghies, windsurfers, canoes\/ kayaks and other watercraft and are supporting racing and training fleets.<\/p>\n Pre requisite: Students must be competent powerboat drivers and present a Power boat level 2 certificate before the course.<\/p>\n The maximum ratio of students: instructor is 6:1 in two boats.<\/p>\n The minimum age is 16 years.<\/p>\n The RYA Safety Boat handbook is available for \u00a310 and is recommended.<\/p>\n (Avon Scout Sailing Team ONLY)<\/b><\/p>\n This new course is ideal for anyone working with children and vulnerable adults in an RYA environment.
