{"id":6,"date":"2023-04-11T07:14:33","date_gmt":"2023-04-11T06:14:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.asgwa.co.uk\/sailing\/?page_id=6"},"modified":"2026-03-17T10:51:59","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T10:51:59","slug":"courses","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.asgwa.co.uk\/sailing\/courses\/","title":{"rendered":"Courses"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h5>\n<p>We are a RYA Recognised Training Centre and provide<\/p>\n<ul class=\"list-unstyled\">\n<li>Sailing courses for Youths (10 to 16 years) and Adults (over 16 years).<\/li>\n<li>Powerboat courses<\/li>\n<li>First aid and other courses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Course participants <strong>do not need to be a member of The Scout Association.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sailing is weather dependent and can be physically demanding, especially on windy days, if you have any concerns about fitness please ask for advice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If a course is full or you have queries please email sailing@avonscouts.org.uk to express an interest and be put on the reserve list, or for answers and advice.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All courses are run from the David Woodhead Centre in Bristol and we use classrooms and facilities at Underfall Yard, Severnside Sub-Aqua Club or at Young Bristol.<\/p>\n<p>Most courses are a minimum of 16 hours (weather permitting), usually Saturday and Sunday, 9-5.30 both days.<\/p>\n<p>The student: instructor ratio is a maximum of 6:1, unless stated otherwise<br \/>\nThe course fees include<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a certificate for all courses,\u00a0if the appropriate standard is achieved.<\/li>\n<li>the Start Sailing book and log book for Stage 1 and Level 1<\/li>\n<li>Start Powerboating handbook for the Level 2 Powerboating course<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Buoyancy aids are provided and are worn at all times when we are on or near the water.<\/p>\n<p>It is important for sailing courses that trainees can swim and are confident in the water<\/p>\n<p>See Information tab about <em><strong><a class=\"text-primary\" href=\"https:\/\/www.asgwa.co.uk\/sailing\/useful-information\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">what to wear<\/a><\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n&lt;!&#8211;A registration form on <a class=\"text-break text-primary\n\" href=\"http:\/\/ascss.org.uk\/registration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/ascss.org.uk\/registration<\/a> must be completed for each student a week before the course.&#8211;&gt;<\/p>\n<div class=\"row align-items-center\">\n<div class=\"col-md-6\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid\" src=\"http:\/\/www.asgwa.co.uk\/sailing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/04\/c1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-md-6\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid\" src=\"http:\/\/www.asgwa.co.uk\/sailing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/04\/c2.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"border border-secondary p-3 my-4\">\n<div class=\"row g-xxl-5 fs-18 gy-4\">\n<div class=\"col-lg-4 wow fadeInLeft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid w-100\" src=\"http:\/\/www.asgwa.co.uk\/sailing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/04\/rya1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-lg-8 wow fadeInRight align-self-center\">\n<h4 class=\"text-secondary fw-bold\">RYA Youth Sailing Courses<\/h4>\n<p>Dinghy Sailing courses from Stage 1 to Stage 4 and Start Racing are available.<\/p>\n<p>The student: instructor ratio is 6:1 however our instructor always has an assistant.<\/p>\n<p>Generally participants sail on their own in small dinghies (Toppers and RS Zests). Sailing can be physically demanding especially on windy days. If you are unsure of the level of fitness required please contact us. The aim is to sail and turn with instruction, usually two or three trainees sail in a crewed boat (Laser Bahia or Wayfarer) with the instructor.<\/p>\n<p>Level 2: Participants require Level 1. The aim is to sail where you want to, in light winds, without an instructor.<\/p>\n<p>Level 3: Participants require Level 2. This consolidates skills and introduces new techniques.<\/p>\n<p>Start Racing: Participants require Level 2. The aim is to understand the basics of racing using Toppers, RS Zests and Fevas and Laser Bahias<\/p>\n<p>Seamanship: An Advanced course and participants require Level 3. For Adults and young people 15 years and over.<\/p>\n<p>The course covers close quarter boat handling skills, basic collision regulations and planing skills.<\/p>\n<p>The student: instructor ratio is a maximum of 3:1<\/p>\n<p><b>Safety boat courses<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Participants should be experienced drivers and the minimum age is 16.
