These sessions are only for scout groups and need to be booked by the Scout (Explorer/ Cub) leader. We can generally accommodate a few non swimmers and we have access to boats suitable for those with limited mobility but it must be arranged in advance. We keep a list of groups who are unable to book (especially small numbers) in case of cancellations, please contact [email protected].
It is the Troop Leader’s responsibility to abide by POR with regard to the Activity Permit and to ensure that an InTouch system is in place. The leader should remain on site with the participants emergency contact details.
If a parent or guardian wishes to book a course for a young person, they can do this through one of our RYA courses. We recommend the minimum age for attending our courses is 10 years.

Generally Tuesdays and Wednesday evenings (plus Thursdays in April and May) at 19.00 until 21.00. A leader may book a maximum of 2 sessions and each booking is for up to 12 scouts. (Do you have a small group? contact us in January to see if there are any options).

Wednesday and Thursday evenings in June and July, 2 sessions ; 18.30 to 20.30 and 19.00 to 21.00.
Each session is for 8 Explorer scouts, the leader may book a maximum of 2 sessions.
Explorers will be given instruction and will take turns to sail in pairs, or on their own, in small boats supported a safety boat. The format is ideal for the Explorer age range and is similar to the start of the RYA Stage 1 course. Participants must be able to swim and be confident in the water.
Each session will have a minimum of an instructor, assistant and safety boat with 4 boats ready to sail at the start time. The Explorers will help to put their boats away at the end of the session.

There are 2 sessions available each day (if only 1 is available someone else has booked the other session). The first booking will be allocated the 7pm session. You can only book 1 date at a time, so 2 sessions on the same date is made on 1 booking, but 2 sessions on different dates will require 2 bookings. Wednesday sessions in June not booked by 10th of February will be reallocated to scouts.

There are 3 Cub days and they are on the 9th May, 20th June and 4th July
A leader may book a maximum of 5 bookings (20 Cubs). Each booking is for 4 Cubs.

Each day has 5 one-hour shifts with starting times of 9.30, 11.00, 12.30, 14.30 and 16.00. There are a maximum of 20 Cubs in each shift.
Cubs should arrive, dressed to sail, 30 minutes before their session to allow for a safety briefing and to put on buoyancy aids. General sailing information can be found on the information tab.
Buoyancy aids are provided however Cubs should be able to swim and be confident in the water (though a limited number of non swimmers may be permitted if pre-advised)

An Instructor led group for young sailors and trainees for a couple of hours in Toppers, Zests and Fevas.
Aim: To have fun and time on the water doing games, challenges, mini races and 5 essentials development also for Scout and Explorer sailing badges work and DoE opportunities.
When: Tuesday evenings 6.30pm to 8.45pm (21st April 2026 until autumn).
Pre requisite: Minimum of Stage 1 skills or attendance of an explorer taster session.

Young sailors and adults may request tuition in sailing or powerboating, from an Instructor, for a couple of hours to consolidate skills already learnt. Also useful to target an action plan to complete a course and for team CPD. Generally run as a 1 to 1.

Aim: Skills improvement, with the help of an instructor, in any of the courses we can run from dinghy stage, or level, 1 to Assistant instructor and powerboat or safety boat refreshers.
Prerequisite: Minimum of Youth Stage 1 or Adult Level 1 skills or a bit rusty but used to sail.

Aim: To have fun and improve your dinghy sailing skills in instructor led sessions. This is not a course but should improve known skills and may introduce new skills.

ASCSS do not run RYA courses at Chew but valuable experience and fun can be had sailing, including using trapezes and spinnakers, on selected Thursday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays during the year. Sessions are generally about two and a half hours and may be morning and/or afternoon. Dates and times are arranged by agreement when Senior Instructors are available and weather permits. The boats used are a Bahia, Wayfarer and Toppers.
