Book Sessions


Taster/ Introductory Sessions:

These sessions are only for groups and need to be booked by the Scout (Explorer/ Cub) leader. We keep a reserve log of groups who want to book (especially small numbers) in case of cancellations, please contact [email protected].

It is the Troop Leader’s responsibility to abide by POR with regard to the Activity Permit and to ensure  that an InTouch system is in place. The leader should remain on site with the participants emergency contact details.

If a parent or guardian wishes to book a course for a young person, they can do this through one of our RYA courses. We recommend the minimum age for attending our courses is 10 years.

INTRODUCTORY SCOUT SESSIONS

Generally Tuesdays and Wednesday evenings at 19.00 until 21.00. A leader may book a maximum of 2 sessions and each booking is for 12 scouts.  (Small group? contact us at the beginning of February to see if there are any options)

Unfortunately you can only book 1 day at a time so 2 sessions will require 2 bookings.

Participants should be able to swim and be confident in the water.

Generally 3 scouts sail in a boat with an instructor with a sailing permit. Buoyancy aids are provided, and we recommend arriving wearing appropriate clothing for sailing.

INTRODUCTORY EXPLORER SESSIONS

Thursday and occasional Wednesday evenings 2 sessions; 18.30 to 20.30 and 19.00 to 21.00.

Each session is for 8 Explorer scouts and a leader may book a maximum of 2 sessions.

There are 2 sessions available each day, if only 1 is available someone else will have booked the other session. The first booking will be allocated the later session. Unfortunately you can only book 1 date at a time, so wanting 2 sessions on the same calendar date can be made on 1 booking, but 2 sessions on different dates will require 2 bookings. 

Participants must be able to swim and be confident in the water.

Explorers will be given instruction and will take turns to sail in pairs, or on their own, in small boats supported a safety boat. The format is ideal for the Explorer age range and is similar to the start of the RYA Stage 1 course.

Each group will have a minimum of an instructor, assistant and safety boat with 4 boats ready to sail at the start time. The Explorers will help to put their boats away at the end of the session.

Buoyancy aids and helmets are provided and we recommend arriving wearing appropriate clothing for sailing.

INTRODUCTORY CUB DAYS

There are 3 Cub days and they are on a Saturday or Sunday

A leader may book a maximum of 5 groups (20 Cubs). Each group is for 4 Cubs.

Generally 4 cubs sail in a boat with an instructor with a sailing permit

Each day has 5 one-hour shifts with starting times of 9.30, 11.00, 13.00, 14.30 and 16.00.

There are a maximum of 20 Cubs in each shift.

Cubs should arrive, dressed to sail, 30 minutes before their allotted time. Buoyancy aids are provided.

Cubs should be able to swim and be confident in the water.

CLUB NIGHTS, TRAINING CLINICS AND AFTERNOON SKILLS SESSIONS

Club nights

An Instructor led group for young sailors and trainees for a couple of hours in Toppers, Zests and Fevas.

Aim: To have fun and time on the water doing games, challenges, mini races and 5 essentials development also for Scout and Explorer sailing badges work and  DoE opportunities.

When: Tuesday evenings 6.30pm to 8.45pm (16th April until autumn).

Pre requisite:  Minimum of Stage 1 skills or attendance of an explorer taster session.

Training Clinic

Young sailors and adults may request tuition in sailing or powerboating, from an Instructor, for a couple of hours to practice skills already learnt and consolidate them. Also useful to target an action plan to complete a course and for team CPD. Generally run as a 1 to 1.

When: Generally Wednesday evenings 6.30pm to 8.45pm (after Easter until autumn) but other times/ days by agreement with an instructor. Please contact [email protected]

Aim: Skills improvement, with the help of an instructor, in any of the courses we can run from dinghy stage, or level, 1 to Assistant instructor and powerboat or safety boat refreshers.

Prerequisite: Minimum of Youth Stage 1 or Adult Level 1 skills or a bit rusty but used to sail.

Afternoon Skills Sessions

Who: Young sailors (aged 10 up to 17) with Stage 1 or above

When: Wednesday afternoons in the school summer holidays (7th, 14th, 21st and 28th August), 2 till 4pm. NOTE: THESE MUST BE PRE- BOOKED AT LEAST A WEEK IN ADVANCE.

Aim: To have fun and improve your dinghy sailing skills in instructor led sessions. This is not a course but should consolidate and improve known skills and may introduce new skills.

Sailing at Chew Valley Lake

ASCSS do not run RYA courses at Chew but valuable experience and fun can be had on selected Thursday evenings, Saturdays and occasional Sundays from May to October. Sessions are generally about two and a half hours and may be morning or afternoon.

Dates and times are arranged by agreement when Senior Instructors are available and weather permits.
